maize: An earlier term for corn and one of the foods served at American harvest celebrations and first presented by the Native Americans who taught the settlers how to grow crops.

Martin Frobisher: An English Explorer who set sail in search of the Northwest Passage and landed at Baffin Island in Canada, and is touted as being the first to establish an ill-fated settlement in the Americas.

Massasoit: The chief of the Wampanoag tribe and also called "yellow feather," he signed a peace treaty in 1621 with the first settlers and was regarded as an ally until his death in 1661.

Mayflower: Filled with 102 passengers, this ship sailed from Plymouth, England, in 1620, for America.

Mayflower Compact: A treaty drawn up while passengers were still aboard the Mayflower stating the men would choose their own leaders and follow the tenets of equal justice for all.

Miles Standish: An English soldier who was the Plymouth colony's first commander with a respected reputation for bravery and for leadership in battle.
